Music Aptitude Tests with Graphic Scores

What is the Music Aptitude Test? The test is used by state secondary schools in the UK to select a percentage of their intake on a music scholarship programme. The Standard Test covers Pitch, Texture, Rhythm and Melody and is designed to test a young person’s natural music aptitude. The MAT is used in Stage 1 of the test.

The Enhanced Test includes supplementary questions and graphic scores to cover the 7-section Music Aptitude Test in the style of the test used for Ashmole Academy. Ashmole hold their MAT earlier than most other UK schools. This usually takes place in June of Year 5.

We offer 1-to-1 lessons to help you prepare for the style of tests you will hear. Book a session online: https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/o/se22-piano-school-16475016451

Music Aptitude Tests for 2023 Secondary Admissions

The start of the new year is the ideal time to start preparing for the Music Aptitude Tests for 2023 state school admissions. For student currently in Year 5, you will sit the MAT test in the Autumn of 2022 so there’s plenty of time to brush up on the style of tests used by schools in England. Our training test materials offer you a wide variety of tests that are similar in style to those you will hear at Round One of the aptitude test.
Music Aptitude Test Training

The music aptitude test is used by state secondary schools to select around 10% of their intake on a music scholarship programme. Some schools use electronic beeps instead of traditional instruments so that students that have already had formal music training are not at a significant advantage.

Music Scholarship Preparation at the SE22 Piano School

You can prepare for the Music Aptitude Tests at Brentwood Ursuline Convent High School by using the following specimen tests that are indicative of the style of test used: http://musicaptitudetest.co.uk/

From the School’s Admissions document: In view of the school’s tradition of excellence in music the governors will admit girls with musical aptitude, up to a maximum of 17 places without undermining the Catholic ethos of the school. Musical aptitude will be determined on the basis of a music aptitude assessment. Priority will be given to those who show the most aptitude on assessment. Additional music training and activities will be provided by the school and these students will be expected to participate in these activities. Music aptitude assessment tests will take place in the Autumn term and you will be informed, before the school application deadline whether your daughter has passed. Please note that a pass does not equate to a guarantee of a place at the school.

The auditions will take place this Autumn when term resumes. Please note we have good availability in August for 1-to-1 lessons to help you prepare. However when term starts we will be busy with our weekly teaching commitments so we will be offering a much reduced service for Zoom lessons so do book soon rather than leaving it until the last minute.
