Harpsichord Competition at the Horniman Museum and Gardens: Dulwich Piano Festival 2014/2015

We were delighted that the Horniman Museum and Gardens hosted the Dulwich Piano Festival’s Harpsichord Competition on their beautiful 1772 Kirckman competition. Steven Devine adjudicated the competition and performed a short recital of music by Handel.

Steven Devine has performed all over the world as a harpsichord soloist (his recent Chandos recording of the Goldberg Variations was described by Gramophone Magazine as “one of the best”), he is a highly sought-after continuo player with permanent positions with the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment, Classical Opera and London Baroque and directs repertoire with a wide range of groups with repertoire from 16th century polyphony to new commissions.

Thank you to Mimi Waitzman and the team and the museum for help making the event possible. We look forward to returning in 2015 and introducing this wonderful instrument to young musicians.

Entries are now open for the 2015 Dulwich Piano Festival:

Harpsichord Competition at the Horniman Museum, November 16th 2014

Sunday 16 November, 3pm – 5pm
Horniman Museum and Gardens
Adjudicator:  Steven Devine

The Dulwich Piano Festival presents the Under 18s Harpsichord Competition for the first time at the Horniman Museum and Gardens in Forest Hill, South London. The Harpsichord Competition was first held in 2013 at Alleyn’s School. With an increasing interest in the harpsichord, the festival organiser, Lorraine Liyanage, approached Mimi Waitzman, Deputy Keeper of Musical Instruments at the Museum to host a larger competition for 2014.

The aim of the competition is designed to bring relevance to the music that we play by performing it on the instrument for which it was written. Our adjudicator Steven Devine says “Collections of historical instruments like this are crucial to our understanding of music and by unlocking the secrets of the instruments, we gain a deeper understanding of the music written for them.”
