Last-minute availability for 1-to-1 Music Aptitude Test preparation lessons.
We have just a handful of spaces left to offer online Zoom lessons to help you prepare for the upcoming Music Scholarship entrance tests to UK secondary schools. Follow our Organiser Profile to see new dates as they are added but bear in mind that now we are back to teaching full-time, we will only have a limited amount of time to offer tuition. If you see a space that is suitable do book it as we cannot guarantee we will be adding many more spaces.
Download our Music Aptitude Test training materials to use with your teacher in your music lessons. Also known at the MAT, the Music Aptitude Test is used by state secondary schools in the UK to select a percentage of their intake on a full or half Music Scholarship system. The tests are quite unusual in that some schools use tests with electronically generated beeps, graphic scores and other unfamiliar topics to students that are already learning a musical instrument. We have designed materials that will give you a flavour of the kinds of tests you will hear on the day. These training materials can be used with your teacher to help you prepare for entry to any UK secondary school. We do not sell the exact same test you will hear on the day, of course.
It’s never too early to start thinking about how you will prepare for Music Scholarship entry to local private schools. The competition is very tough and a high standard is expected. If you would like to know if you are on target for selection and how you can best prepare, do consider booking a consultation lesson where I will talk through the various options for schools you are considering, plus the standard required. I will also sketch a plan of how to best prepare for the audition including recommended guidelines on exam entry, festivals and other competitions. I can also prep students for the interview with mock questions that you can expect to be asked. I also discuss suitable repertoire. Please book a session online.
Consultation lessons are recommended 1 or 2 years in advance of the audition date. Mock interview/auditions can be scheduled nearer the time, usually the term before the audition is advisable.
Candidates should show evidence of real musical ability and offer at least two instruments, or voice and one instrument. It is not essential for candidates to have taken music examinations but, as a guide, the standard expected on the principal instrument corresponds with Grade V at 11+, and with Grade VI at 13+. Not all candidates who apply will be called for audition.
Tips for the Interview:
Prepare a portfolio of your musical achievements (exam results, festival certificates etc)
List all the venues where you have performed
Think about how you will fit into the current musical ensembles that the school offers. Would you like to learn a new instrument so you can take part in the wind band? Or how about learning percussion to play in the orchestra if you are a pianist?
Choose an audition piece that is memorable – a catchy title, a living composer or something you composed yourself all make for a stand-out performance.

One of the most popular secondary schools in West London offers just 12 spaces on a Music Scholarship place. These places are highly sought after and awarded to students playing at a higher than average level.
If selected, scholars are expected to make a commitment to their musical education – arriving at school early on some days, giving up their lunch break on others, ensuring they practise their chosen instrument regularly, etc. The programme aims to develop the practical abilities of scholars and deepen their understanding of how music works. Keyboard skills, ensemble playing, pitch perception and music theory are at the centre of these lessons, along with learning to use notation and sequencing software.
Why Sit the Test?
A priority place at WLFS, regardless of catchment area.
A half hour instrumental or singing lesson each week, paid for by the school.
Theory of music classes on Wednesdays at 8.00am.
Membership of the school choir.
Sight-singing classes.
What is Included in the Test?
The test at Year 7 is designed to identify pupils who have musical potential as well as those who already study an instrument. So long as your child has a love of music, we would encourage you to apply. The test lasts 5 to 10 minutes and assesses pitch perception and sense of rhythm/pulse. The candidates will not be asked to prepare anything or bring an instrument, as the test is completed entirely vocally. It is not a test of vocal quality.
Can I Download Any Training Materials?
We do offer a digital download which is useful preparation for these styles of tests. However as the WLFS test is entirely vocal then we recommend booking a 1-to-1 lesson to work on general musical ability in the style of tests you might hear on the day. Please note the tests varies each year so we cannot guarantee what you will hear on the day.
How do I book a 1-to-1 lesson?
You can book online on Eventbrite which shows all available times. Our teachers fit these lessons around their weekly teaching commitments so there are no other slots available other than what is listed.
